In connection with the booming sectors of vehicle connectivity and “autonomous driving,” intuitive vehicle operation must not be overlooked. Until widespread fully autonomous transportation can be realized, it is necessary to find clever solutions for the long interim phase of semi-autonomous mobility.

“In principle, modern vehicles have been equipped with systems for semi-autonomous transportation for some time. After all, sensors such as distance radar, lane-keeping assistants, etc., must be included in this context. The key to the success of the connected vehicle and autonomous transportation will be highly intuitive and situationally adaptable HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), which on the one hand take over the rudimentary tasks of driving, but on the other hand maintain the safety required to intervene immediately in driving events in an emergency. Furthermore, the explicit requirements of women and men are different and must therefore be considered separately,” says Stottan regarding the numerous upcoming tasks for the automotive industry.

It remains to be seen which innovations vehicle drivers will be confronted with in the near future, as renowned IT giants are also pushing into the previously clearly structured world of the automobile.
